Colisseum, Forum

Mostly pics this time since I'm running behind.  Taking WAY more pictures than I'm posting, any and all are available in higher res if you'd like (just ask).

Tip: you can click on any photo and put this page into "slideshow" view if you just want to see the photos.

Above: the Victor Emanuelle memorial

Trajan's column, a memorial to Trajan's favorite person: Trajan.

Several statues and ruins line the street walking from the Victor Emanuelle memorial up toward the Colisseum.

Some nice fellow tourists offered to take a family photo.

A nice view showing a real life "cutaway" of the arena floor.  The Romans were able to flood the entire arena when needed to stage mock naval battles.

Walking up the Palatine hill.  The word "Palatine" gives us the English word "palace" and is where most of the rich Romans built their houses.  In the later days of the Empire (prior to the move of the capital to Constantinople), almost the entirety of the top of the Palatine hill was taken up by the palace of the Emperor Domitian.  Like most Roman residences (even today) it was built on top of the ruins of other former houses.
Most of the living quarters were actually below ground, which must have kept them rather cool in the summer.

The arena, the private horse-training grounds of the palace.  At one time this would have opened directly onto the Circus Maximus.

Descending into the Forum on one side.

The temple of Romulus, legendary founder of Rome.

One of my favorite photos from today, not sure why this one struck me so.

The scale of the forum is hard to describe.  It's a massive area.
